SMC 10K. Still not good.

SATURDAY 19/2/05, 11.30AM- 11K

Was up the mountains and the only time I could fit in a run was just before lunch in 31 C heat. Did the Shaws Ridge bush loop again in 1.04, 5.59min/km. Considerably slower than last week, which partly was explained by the conditions. Felt pretty wanky right from the start and improved a little as the run went on. Spent the whole afternoon and evening drinking water continuously.

SUNDAY 20/2/05, 7.30AM- 12K (10K race plus warmup)

21 degrees and 95% humidity but a cool southerly breeze. Went through 2.5K in 10.13, on pace for sub 41 but was already breathing too hard. Reached the turnaround in 20.55 and said out loud "ahh, shit"- no chance of a sub 41 now, and I wasn't feeling like I could hang on for sub 42 either. Eventually wheezed across the line in 42.31.

I found this result particularly depressing given Friday's workout indicated sub 41 was definitely on the cards, and because it pretty much rules out being in sub 3 marathon shape by July, given you need to be running a 38 minute 10K for that to be feasible. What happened, that I ran two minutes slower than I should have? Dunno. Got some thinking to do.

Gosh you do suck!

Fancy being able to only do 10k in 42.31?

Hang up the shoes now Mister G. Take up tennis.....

says me - who still has only a 50.19 10k pb to my name.

G Man, don't get too down on yourself about yesterday. It's hard to stay focussed in the 10km at SMC as the course, apart from being uninspirational and quite a tough course, it is always run in very humid conditions which aren't going to lead to fast times. You just need to keep training hard and the sub 41 will happen, quite possibly at Homebush.
